Hairspray cast practicing a dance number

Broadway makes its return to Ball State with the university’s staging of “Hairspray,” coming to the University Theatre stage at 7:30 p.m. April 1-3 and 5-8, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee April 3 and 10. An 8 p.m. showing is also scheduled for April 9.

The Tony-awarding musical comedy tells the story of quirky, plus-sized Tracy Turnblad, the Baltimore, Maryland teenager who in 1962 has one dream: to dance on the "Corny Collins Show."

When that dream finally comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. With the help of her new friends, kooky parents, and some hip moves, Tracy uses her stardom to teach the world a thing or two about acceptance and equality, all without denting her bee-hive hairdo.
