Ball State University President Geoffrey S. Mearns addresses 18 high-achieving college students before they received full scholarships during a luncheon hosted by Indiana’s First Lady Janet Holcomb.
Ball State University presented 18 high-achieving students with full scholarships at the Governor’s Residence during a luncheon Thursday, Oct. 4 hosted by Indiana’s First Lady Janet Holcomb.
Named as Centennial Scholars in concurrence with Ball State’s 100th anniversary, these students were selected by the University’s academic colleges and represent a variety of majors. While pursuing different dreams, all have shown a proven commitment to outstanding academic achievement and active community engagement.
“We are here this afternoon to celebrate a remarkable group of young women and men who have been selected as our 2018 class of Centennial Scholars,” Ball State President Geoffrey S. Mearns told the students during the Oct. 4 luncheon in Indianapolis. “Their academic and civic accomplishments reflect our University’s enduring values — values that have guided this institution through our proud past and will continue to be a source of inspiration for our bright future.
“To those of you being honored today, congratulations. Your designation as a Centennial Scholar is a defining moment in our celebration of our University’s 100th anniversary. Today is our opportunity to recognize you as the smart, capable leaders you are. I am proud of all of you."
Now in their final year of enrollment at Ball State, these 18 students have received full, in-state tuition for the 2018-19 academic year. The scholarships will empower them to reach their full potential in their professional lives while making meaningful contributions to their communities.
First Lady Holcomb is a Ball State graduate, receiving her bachelor and master’s degrees in fine arts from the University. She praised the University for empowering her with a passion and a purpose for the arts and for serving others.
