Ball State University’s Department of Journalism has announced guidelines for the 2019 Eugene S. Pulliam National Journalism Writing Award competition. The award, which is sponsored by the Pulliam family and coordinated by Ball State, honors outstanding writing in United States-based newspapers and magazines. There is no entry fee for the competition, and the winner receives a $1,000 prize and hotel accommodations at Ball State for the annual award ceremony on March 28. Three previous winners of the prestigious Pulliam Award have subsequently won the Pulitzer Prize for journalism.

Contest guidelines require that entries are limited to one per writer for a single article published during the 2018 calendar year prior to Dec. 1, 2018. No series or serial narrative may be entered; one article entry from a series is permitted. Entries are limited to five per publication and fifteen per publisher of multiple periodicals or syndicates. Each entry must include a signed cover letter, and the submitted article may be no larger than 8.5 by 11 inches. Faxed and emailed entries are not permitted. Entries must be postmarked by Friday, Dec. 7, 2018 and received by Friday, Dec. 14, 2018.
