What is the Dual Credit Program?

Ball State University’s Dual Credit Program allows high school students across Indiana to earn both high school and college credit at the same time. Courses are taught by Ball State faculty or high school instructors who have been certified as Ball State adjuncts. These courses follow the same academic standards as on-campus university courses.

Who is eligible to participate?

The program is generally open to high school juniors and seniors. Students should be:

  • On track for college admission
  • In the top third of their class
  • Maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale

Students who do not meet these criteria may still be eligible with a guidance counselor’s recommendation.

How do I apply and register?

To enroll, students must:

  1. Complete the admission application
  2. Submit the Parent/School Permission form
  3. Register for courses through Ball State’s online system

What courses are available?

Ball State offers dual credit courses in subjects such as English, math, history, psychology, communication, and more. Many of these courses align with the Indiana Core Transfer Library and Indiana College Core.

How much does it cost?

  • Priority courses onsite - $25 per credit hour
  • All other onsite courses - $250 total
  • All online courses - $350 + textbook costs

Students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch may be eligible for a full tuition waiver.

How do I make a payment?

A paper bill will be mailed to your home address. Parents may send checks or use an online payment system known as eBill. Parents should use the "Guest Payer" option to make online payments. They will need to know the students Ball State ID number to do this. It is included on your paper bill. You may opt in to online billing after the first tuition bill is received.

Are textbooks included in the course fee?

No. Students are responsible for purchasing or accessing required course materials. Information about textbooks is provided by instructors or included in the course syllabi.

What grade do I need to earn college credit?

Students must earn at least a C- in the course to receive college credit. Some departments may require a minimum grade of C. Earning higher grades helps ensure credit transferability.

Can I drop or withdraw from a course?

Yes. Students may drop or withdraw, but deadlines apply. Refund eligibility depends on the date of withdrawal. To avoid being billed, it is critical to notify the Dual Credit Office as soon as possible.

Will my credits transfer to other colleges or universities?

Courses taken through Ball State’s Dual Credit Program are recorded on an official university transcript. Most credits transfer to other institutions, particularly within Indiana. However, acceptance policies vary, so students should confirm if their credits will transfer to the college or university they plan to attend.

What is the Indiana College Core?

The Indiana College Core (ICC) is a 30-credit block of general education courses that transfer to all Indiana public colleges and many private ones. Students can complete the block through eligible dual credit courses in high school.

How can a high school become a dual credit partner?

High schools can apply to partner with Ball State to offer dual credit courses. Teachers must meet credential requirements including:

  • A master’s degree in the subject area, OR
  • A master’s degree plus at least 18 graduate credit hours in the subject taught
