Journalism Program
This concentration is one of four in our bachelor’s degree in journalism program.
Receive the full breadth of expertise in the School of Journalism and Strategic Communication, with introductions into advertising, public relations, media research, media analytics and content strategy. In the mass communication concentration of our bachelor’s degree in journalism, you’ll learn how to research a topic, be strategic in your problem-solving and be able to interpret data in an insightful way that will make a difference for your clients. Additionally, you’ll learn media skills that are in high demand.
Our students work together for real-life clients in interactive, technology-rich media and agency spaces. Our state-of-the-art space, the Unified Media Lab, is an 8,000 square-foot facility that includes newsrooms for our student media organizations, classroom space, a digital news desk, and a wide variety of student-run media opportunities including the Daily News. The McKinley Avenue Agency is a strategic communication and media sales organization, under the guidance of a professional adviser. The agency empowers local businesses and gives students a path to develop a professional-grade portfolio.
We teach empathy and self-awareness, not only for recognizing personal biases but also for helping students to stay grounded in professional ethics throughout their careers. Students tell us they arrive on campus and find more than an academic home; they find a sense of belonging that connects with them almost immediately and they launch onto a career path that leads to meaningful work.
Students leave prepared for careers in advertising and public relations agencies, in-house communications departments at corporations and nonprofit organizations, higher education and government agencies.
The journalism mass communications concentration allowed me to explore all aspects of journalism. I have many interests within journalism such as news, journalism design, and even photojournalism. This concentration lets me dip my toes in each of those areas, making me a well-rounded journalist after graduation.
