Quick Facts

Explore storytelling through photography, connecting students with a visual vocabulary by studying the work of important photographers and photojournalists. As a student in the photojournalism concentration of our bachelor’s degree in journalism, you’ll have opportunities to meet and receive coaching from many of these notable professionals.

You’ll learn not only the necessary technical skills of shooting and editing but also participate in diverse field exercises and explore methods, ethics, and opportunities for storytelling through photographs. We connect students with experiences that elevate their work and their marketability.

Past projects like as Shoot for Good Muncie Athletics Photography (Media Passes to Ball State games) showcase the kind of work you’ll be prepared to undertake.

Our award-winning faculty bring years of professional experience to the classroom, are agile and adaptive, embracing a fast-changing media landscape that pushes innovation and entrepreneurial learning.

We teach empathy and self-awareness, not only for recognizing personal biases but also for helping students to stay grounded in professional ethics throughout their careers. We are intentional in purpose and embed experiences across our curriculum that are transformational. Students tell us they arrive on campus and find more than an academic home; they find a community built around the craft of visual storytelling and the photographic life. This prepares them for a career of meaningful work, serving and informing audiences through documentary photography and videography.

Career Paths: Graduates specializing in Photographic Storytelling can pursue various roles, including independent photographer, editorial photographer, commercial photographer, travel photographer, marketing photographer, visual editor, visual content creator, forensic photographer, wildlife photographer, wedding photographer, event photographer, and more.
