Mission Statement

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in dance focuses on how bodies in motion affect the world, and how dance is, in turn, affected by the world we live in. We connect artistic discovery to real-world application, asking students to self-direct, innovate, collaborate, and implement a plan for their time on campus and beyond. We are committed to developing individual technique, artistry, creativity, and intellect through a holistic understanding of the historical, social, and conceptual aspects of dance.

About the Program

Students have several opportunities to further develop their dance technique in West African, hip hop, musical theatre, jazz, tap, modern, and ballet. Our dance program values all dance techniques equally and offers various levels in all forms. In addition to technique training, students practice and study choreography, pedagogy, and history that facilitate creative collaboration and provide transformative experiences.

Our undergraduate-only program offers the potential to perform through immersive experiences in our flexible studios and multiple theatre and dance venues, providing opportunities to explore various styles of dance as a performer and to develop a unique artistic voice. Every year, the program also provides external professional development opportunities to take classes and perform at nationally recognized venues and festivals. Past opportunities include the American College Dance Association conference, Gibney Dance Center Group Study Program, and the University Partners Showcase/Marth Graham Dance Company experience.

The dance program takes a proactive approach to career preparation. Throughout the 4-year program, students develop a portfolio of work and create a personalized senior capstone, which allows students to combine their passion for dance and prepares them to transition from college to a professional dance career.

The BFA dance major is audition based and students must be academically admitted to Ball State in order to receive an offer in the area of study. Audition and application information is below under Take the Next Step.
