Matthew Reeder
Associate Professor of Directing and Shakespeare and Online Specialist
Matthew is the coordinator of the Directing and Stage Management program. Before coming to Ball State, Matthew was a Chicago area director, artistic director and actor over a decade. While in Chicago, he was an ensemble member with Adventure Stage Chicago, served as Artistic Director and ensemble member of BackStage Theatre Company, and was a director in residence at the Metropolis Performing Arts Center. Other regional freelance directing credits include work with Fox Valley Repertory, Illinois Repertory Theatre, the Playing French Festival at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Actors Theatre of Indiana, Phoenix Theatre and the Clarence Brown Theatre.
At Ball State, Matthew teaches all levels of Directing courses, Shakespeare in Contemporary Performance, and acting and directing masterclasses. Matthew’s publications include contributions to Texas Theatre Journal and Etudes Performance Journal. In 2022, Matthew co-led an international lectureship alongside Broadway composer Jeanine Tesori, where they taught “the art of musical theatre collaboration,” to professional composers and writers in based Shanghai, China.
Matthew holds an M.F.A in Directing from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a B.S. in Musical Theater from Ball State University.
