The building system includes load-bearing strawbale walls, wood floor and roof framing, a high thermal mass fly-ash concrete greenhouse floor, wood windows, and floor, wall and roof surfaces. The building system is extremely energy-efficient due to the high insulation value of the strawbale walls, the proportion of N-S versus E-W walls, the building’s orientation, the roof overhang proportions, and the thermal mass of the greenhouse floor.
To learn more about the building system including exploded drawings (foundation system, wall system, and overall building system) and pictures of Ball State students constructing the module, see the Constructing Strawbale Building/Greenhouse Component section.
