Passive energy systems and technologies are those, such as direct solar gain, that harvest and use energy without other sources of energy or mechanical means. For the learning module we proposed a combination of natural ventilation, direct solar gain, and thermal efficiency. For natural ventilation, we located windows appropriately and used the stack effect of the sloped roof to optimize air movement. For optimal solar passive, we oriented the building and shaped its overhangs for summer solar shading and winter solar access. For thermal efficiency we took advantage of the very high insulation value of thick straw walls; as well as the high thermal mass of the fly-ash concrete greenhouse flow to function as a thermal “flywheel”.
