Jessica Vitkin is a filmmaker and educator with an interest in satire, miscommunication and the slightly surreal. Working in narrative and documentary film as a 1st AD, producer, writer, editor and researcher, professional credits include PBS, Netflix, Kartemquin Films, State Street Pictures and W.W. Norton. As a filmmaker, her work has screened domestically and internationally at festivals including RiverRun International Film Festival, BLUSH Film Festival, London Women’s Festival, Chain NYC, Cucalorus and PEEPHOLE FilmFest.

She has taught courses in documentary and narrative production, editing, producing, and film studies. Her teaching experience extends beyond higher education to ESL instruction, creative writing, and improv comedy. As an instructor, she emphasizes an open and collaborative environment for hands-on practice and experimentation to assist students in developing their individual voices.

Prior to coming to Ball State, she taught in the Film Studies Department at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, worked as a social worker in Chicago, a teacher in South Korea and a communications director in Myanmar.

Vitkin holds an M.F.A. in Filmmaking from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, an M.Sc. in Digital Media and Storytelling from Loyola University Chicago, and a B.A. in International Studies and Political Science from Western Michigan University.
