
The Ball State University Teachers College is proud to be a part of the
American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) Holmes Scholar Program. Holmes Scholars are high-achieving students who are pursuing doctoral degrees in education. Scholars are selected based on their achievements.
Ball State Holmes Scholars enjoy the benefit of mentorship at the collegiate and national level, professional development opportunities, and enriching peer relationships. Through Holmes’ affiliation with AACTE, scholars are invited to present their research at the AACTE annual conference as well as participate in the AACTE Holmes Scholars Summer Policy Institute and the AACTE Day on the Hill.
Scholar Benefits
Benefits of being a Holmes Scholar include:
- Membership in a national network of peers with access to dedicated online social networks.
- Mentoring opportunities by Holmes Scholar alumni currently in academia and other leadership positions.
- Opportunities to present their research at the AACTE Annual Meeting.
- Dedicated mentoring programs at the AACTE Annual Meeting.
- A job fair at the AACTE Annual Meeting and access to position announcements through the year.
- Annual Holmes Scholars Summer Policy Institute in Washington, DC, including participation in AACTE’s Day on the Hill and networking events associated with the AACTE State Leaders Institute.
- Leadership and professional development opportunities at the national level, such as participation in conference presentations and policy/advocacy training.
- Regular graduate assistant stipend, plus an additional $8000 stipend is awarded per year.
- Allowance for travel and research costs ($5000 per year).

Students selected as Holmes Scholars agree to the following commitments:
- Three-year commitment to the program
- Commitment to being present on campus
- Not otherwise employed for more than 20 hours per week
- Attendance at monthly meetings (days/times to be determined)
- Submit proposals for conferences
- Attend American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) National Conference
- Engage in research of the Scholar’s choosing and engage in activities to support that research
- Attend an AACTE Policy Institute event

Who Can Apply?
Students demonstrating financial need from any department in Teachers College.
Qualifications
- Be able to make a three-year commitment to being a Holmes Scholar. You must have three years or more left in your graduate program.
- Be able to be on campus and not work at another job for more than 20 hours per week
- Currently or plan to engage in the following types of research:
- Teacher education (preservice and/or in-service)
- School-based focus (e.g., educational administration/leadership, curriculum studies, school counseling, special education, early childhood education, school psychology, secondary education, elementary education)
- Educational research focus (e.g., educational measurement and statistics, qualitative inquiry)
- Other areas related to education
