Research Focus: The effects of media consumption on attitudes related to crime and justice; Criminological theories; Substance use
Potential Student Project(s):
There are many opportunities for student projects: Students and I can brainstorm new ideas on how media consumption affects attitudes and opinions about crime and justice. We can collect data at the University-level with IRB approval to explore these topics further. 1. Students can help me with ongoing projects on topics such as media consumption effects or criminological theories. 2. 3. Students can come up with new topics to explore using existing data sets I have. Students can assist with identifying, reading, and summarizing literature relevant to my or their research interests.
Attributes/skills/background sought in undergraduate:
- Motivated, curious, and adaptable
- Detailed oriented and have a strong work ethic
- Ability to locate, read, and provide summaries on academic scholarship
Mentoring Plan:
The student researcher will work 5 h/week on the project including a 1-on-1 interaction with me for at least 1 hour/week. My mentoring will assist students through weekly meetings of mentorship to achieve one or more of the following goals: 1. Learn some of the basics of research, including, but not limited to, coming up with an interesting topic to explore, creating a survey, and reading/understanding prior literature about that topic 2. Assist with current/ongoing research projects, such as writing article summaries, working on paper drafts, and proofreading/editing 3. Showcase research through potential ways such as article publications or presentations
