The School of Art offers a four-year liberal arts degree leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Art with a concentration in Art History.
Art History explores objects, images, and spaces across time and cultures, examining their significance within historical, cultural, political, religious, and social contexts. Students develop strong analytical, research, and communication skills through a curriculum that spans global traditions and historical eras.
The program begins with comprehensive surveys of global art, from ancient to contemporary periods. Intermediate coursework focuses on three key areas:
- Ancient to early modern Europe
- Asia, Africa, and Latin America
- Modern and contemporary art
Advanced courses introduce a range of art historical methods and emphasize critical thinking, collaboration, and in-depth exploration of specific cultures or periods. Students build confidence in oral and written communication through presentations, discussions, and focused research.
In advanced seminars, students work closely with faculty to develop original research questions and complete a thesis-driven capstone project, which includes an extended paper and public presentation.
Opportunities extend beyond the classroom. Students engage directly with the David Owsley Museum of Art, take field trips to regional and national museums, and participate in study abroad programs that allow them to experience major artworks and global cultures firsthand.
