With over 2,000 square feet, The Ned and Gloria Griner Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Art and Journalism Building, adjacent to the Ball State Bookstore (owned by Barnes and Noble)

and near the building's main elevator and staircase.

The mission of The Ned and Gloria Griner Art Gallery is the promotion and appreciation of the visual arts for studio artists, educators, and designers. The gallery serves as an important educational tool as it provides opportunities for students, faculty, and the broader arts community to showcase works and view the artwork of others.

The gallery is the primary location for receptions for School of Art students’ thesis exhibitions. It is also a venue for exceptional juried and visiting exhibitions in various media with regional, national and international participation. The School of Art invites proposals for its 2026-27 exhibition season. Artists, designers, and curators are encouraged to review the call for proposals here and submit by March 10, 2026. Questions may be directed to Professor Jessica Calderwood.

Normal Hours

Tuesday – Friday: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Closed weekends and all Ball State breaks and holidays.

Open select Saturdays and Sundays for special events as the exhibition schedule allows.

Visiting Artists Designers and Scholars Program

Each year the School of Art invites a diverse group of nationally and internationally recognized artists, designers, and scholars to share their distinct practices and voices with its students and the community. Students and the public alike can engage with these invited practitioners through lectures, screenings, performances, readings, conversations, studio critiques, and workshops.

This program is one of many valuable resources promoted through the School of Art that contributes to the experiences art students need to begin building relationships within the professional art world and to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of contemporary art and culture.

All events are free, non-ticketed, and open to the public unless otherwise specified.

Annual Student Art Show

The School of Art’s Annual Student Art Show displays artwork produced by students and gives students the opportunity to participate in a professional exhibition where a qualified juror selects

artwork and artistic awards of distinction.

The public is invited to visit the exhibition at the The Ned and Gloria Griner Art Gallery, located just off the Atrium Food Court in AJ 101 in the Art and Journalism Building.

Fred Meyer Lecture in Cultural Policy and Arts Advocacy

The School of Art is proud to bring artists and creative thinkers from around the world to campus each year for the Fred Meyer Lecture Series in Cultural Policy and Arts Advocacy. Once a year,

we invite inspiring artists and advocates to speak to our students and community about the value of the arts and culture. Past speakers include Kimberly Drew, Sharon Louden, Sarah Urist Green, Lia Halloran, Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross, and Michael Greer.

Saturday Childrens Art Classes

Each year, Art Education students teach fun and creative art classes for children in grades 1-6. Kids will learn about exciting artists and artworks, plus work with a range of artistic materials in a fun and creative atmosphere. Each Saturday student teachers present and discuss artworks and artists and engage kids in group activities and games in which they will practice their art-thinking skills create fun and imaginative art projects. Classes are held in the Art and Journalism Building, easily accessed off Riverside Avenue on the Ball State campus. Learn more.

Studio 165+

Studio 165+ is a professional graphic design course that aims to offer a rich academic experience with an emphasis on real-world application through design and marketing campaigns across multiple

media platforms. In the first five semesters, Studio 165+ has worked with some reputable clients including Mayor’s Arts Award, WCRD Radio, The Facing Project, Muncie Arts & Culture Trail, Muncie’s Bridge Dinner, PlySpace Residency, Sutton Foster, and Queer Chocolatier. The studio continues to add newer projects to its repertoire and grow with the passion and determination of its members.

First Thursday

Downtown Muncie comes alive on the first Thursday of each month when galleries, shops, restaurants open their doors to the community and display local art. You will find pop-up sales, exhibitions,

and performances by School of Art students and faculty and other creatives in our community. Learn more.
