Jennifer Halvorson
Associate Professor of Art and Associate Director of the School of Art
Jennifer Halvorson was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She earned dual BFA degrees in Metal and Glass at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, IL. In 2005, she studied abroad at the Australian National University in Canberra. After completing her undergraduate studies, Jennifer traveled to Denmark as a Fulbright Scholar. She continued studying glass at Danmarks Designskole in Copenhagen and became assistant to glass artist Steffen Dam.
Jennifer earned her Master of Fine Arts in Glass from the Rochester Institute of Technology, within the School for American Craft, in Rochester, NY. She was a Resident Artist at Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center Millville, NJ in fall 2010, and was a Visiting Scholar within the glass department at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL in spring 2011.
Jennifer’s work has been featured in New Glass Review 32 and New Glass Review 35, published by the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, NY. Jennifer’s work is exhibited nationally and internationally. In fall 2013, her artwork was exhibited at the annual international exhibition Sculptural Objects, Functional Art + Design (SOFA) in Chicago, IL. The collection of representational objects within Jennifer’s work represents emotional connections between people, generations, or desires of the individual. Her focus is connected to past values, as well as present concerns. She aims to engage with the viewer, to better understand the tangled emotion of comfort and longing. Glass is the main material within her sculptures, for through its delicate transparent mass, a form’s permanent folds, twists and lines may be observed, engaging the viewer in a larger narrative.
